Drone Attacks Report
The drone attack killed at least two horse riders in Degan village, located in the Datta Khel tribal area, reported the DAWN publication. The alleged militants and their horses died on the scene. Rewported http://www.theepochtimes.com...
This is the first drone strike in March, following a month-long lull, DAWN points out. Two prior attacks took place on Feb. 6 and Feb. 8, respectively. U.S .and Pakistani officials, however, dispute whether the two attacks were drone strikes or were something else.
Pakistan has been a vociferous critic of U.S. drone strikes in its territory, accusing Washington of violating its sovereignty.
“We don’t know the identity of those killed, and our local contacts say the bodies were unrecognizable and beyond recognition. We don’t know if they were locals or foreign militants,” a source in Peshawar told The New York Times, while adding that “details are sketchy.”
The official said the two were riding on a motorcycle when the drone attack took place. However, another official and other reports claimed the militants were on horseback.
A Taliban spokesman told the Times: “I cannot confirm their nationality and group affiliation at the moment.”
North Waziristan is considered generally a safe haven for members of the Haqqani network, which is allied with the Taliban and other militant groups, according to Radio Free Europe. The Haqqani network has been accused by NATO of carrying out attacks on NATO forces and civilians in Afghanistan.
The Bureau of Investigative Journalism says that between 2004 and 2013, there have been 364 CIA drone strikes. Under the Obama administration, there have been 312.
The bureau estimates that between 411 and 884 civilians were killed and of that figure, between 168 and 197 were children.
