The Mystery of the White Shark Café

The Mystery of the White Shark Café

The oceans of the world are home to all manner of dangerous and frightening creatures. This kill or be killed ecosystem has given rise to fanged beasts, stinging killers, and a menagerie of all manner of toothed, spiked, spined, and poisonous organisms of all shapes and sizes. Yet of all these the most feared, respected, and indeed misunderstood remains the majestic, terrifying, and oddly beautiful great white shark. Now for most people one of these huge, deadly fish is scary enough, but imagine hundreds of them coming together in a mass of fins and serrated teeth, a congregation of stealthy death straight out of our nightmares. Far out in the Pacific Ocean one such place exists. It is a place to which these ferocious sharks are inexorably drawn in vast numbers, which perhaps even more frighteningly is for reasons that scientists have not even begun to comprehend.
The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known variously as the great white, white pointer, white shark, or white death, is a large shark that can reach lengths of over 20 feet and weigh 3 tons, and is the only known surviving member of the genus Carcharodon. They are found in cool coastal waters around the world and through movies and their fierce appearance have developed an image as silent, merciless underwater killers. One habitat of great white sharks is off the coast of Central California and its offshore islands, a population that is most probably genetically distinct, which preys mostly on marine mammals such as seals or sea lions, the occasional fish or sea bird, and are not above the occasional surfer as well. With its enormous bulk, beady black eyes, gaping maws, formidable jagged teeth, and its reputation as a man-eater, the great white is one of the most highly feared creatures in the ocean, its very presence enough to make some people shun going into the water altogether.

For such a large and notorious creature, the great white shark is still largely an enigma. The sharks are famously elusive and unpredictable, making studying them and gleaning some understanding of what makes them tick a tricky business. Very little is known of these sharks’ habits, and their movements were long considered to be a total mystery. It has only been in the past decade that mobile shark cages and satellite-enabled tracking devices have really been able to shed some light on where these magnificent predators go, how deep they dive, their migration patterns, and feeding habits. It was known that they spent half of the year in their feeding grounds close to shore, but it had long been a complete mystery as to where the sharks went for the rest of the year. The only thing that was really known for sure was that the sharks could migrate over mind bogglingly vast distances, with one individual shark, affectionately named Nicole, once tracked from South Africa to Australia and back, a total distance of an incredible 12,400 miles.
What is known now thanks to tracking studies conducted by researchers from Stanford, UC Davis, and the Point Reyes Bird Observatory and the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, the great white sharks of California spend about half of the year, from August to February, prowling waters close to shore off the Farallon Islands, Año Nuevo Island and various points off Central California, including occasional and undoubtedly unsettling forays into San Francisco Bay, all of which comprises a region rather ominously referred to as The Red Triangle. The sharks like it here because there is abundant prey, such as sea lions, harbor seals, and elephant seals, as well as plentiful fish and sea otters in these waters, which the solitary predators devour with relish. Starting in around December, the number of sharks in the area begins to dwindle as they begin to head out of the area to new feeding grounds. Data showed that about 20% of the sharks made their way to the Hawaiian Islands, and although great whites are typically solitary loners, they all followed approximately the same route and exhibited a very well-defined migratory pattern. Once in Hawaii, it is suspected that they feed on humpback whales or their placentas. Yet although the tracking data gave researchers a lot of answers and insight into great white behavior, it also opened the door to an enduring and perplexing mystery which has been yet to be solved.

The tracking studies showed that while 20% of the Californian great whites headed to Hawaii to feed and generally freak people out, a large portion of the sharks opted to consistently congregate at a well-defined, secluded, remote patch of ocean in the middle of the Pacific, located about halfway between the Baja Peninsula and the Hawaiian Island in order to… well, no one really knows. There are several things that make this behavior strange. For one, the area where the sharks are gathering is seemingly just a random spot in the middle of nowhere. There is no indication or evidence of any particular reason why so many sharks should all want to come to this one specific area, and it was never considered as a shark habitat previously. It isn’t even particularly understood how the sharks even find this place time and time again considering there seems to be nothing remarkable about the area at all. There is also the fact that the spot where all of these great whites are gathering is basically a barren wasteland, the ocean’s equivalent of a desert. It is not a productive feeding ground, with no virtually no prey here to attract the large sharks, making it all the more bizarre that they should find this place so alluring. Even stranger still is that they will opt to linger in this barren area for months on end even without any discernible prey before heading back to California to where all the seals are. Despite no one having the slightest idea of why so many great whites come here, they continue to do it year after year, and the area was coined the “White Shark Café” by researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in 2002.
There are other odd features of the White Shark Café concerning the behavior of the sharks that come here as well. While great white sharks are usually solitary hunters that rarely fraternize with their own kind and generally avoid each other, they come to this mysterious area in great numbers and in close proximity as they languish about apparently doing nothing. It is practically unheard of for so many great white sharks to come into such close proximity, in such concentrations, for such long lengths of time, and researchers haven’t been able to figure out why. With so many of the ferocious predators cruising about out in the middle of nowhere, one can only imagine how terrifying a sight this must have been for whoever first laid eyes upon it. Another mysterious behavior exhibited by the sharks at the White Shark Café is all of the diving they seem to be doing during their journey here, as well as upon arrival. While great whites have been tracked to do some impressively deep dives on occasion, on the way to the White Shark Café the sharks were found to make truly epic dives, sometimes plunging as far as 3,000 feet or more down into the dark depths. Once they arrive at the White Shark Café they dive to depths of around 1,000 feet over and over again, approximately once every 10 minutes or 30 to 96 times per day, which is far more often and deeper than is typical. Again, no one knows why.

There are a few theories as to why the great white sharks come here to this remote and desolate stretch of water in such vast numbers. One idea is that they come here to mate, yet none of the sharks have been observed actually engaging in such behavior or giving birth, and the presence of juvenile sharks below breeding age here also seems to cast doubt on the idea. Another idea is that they are here to intercept some sort of mobile food source such as schools of tuna or billfish, yet these fish are typically too fast for the sharks to reliably catch. One of the more interesting theories is that the white sharks are not here to catch tuna, but rather something much larger and more mysterious; the giant squid. The constant deep dives the sharks make and the presence of sperm whales, known predators of giant squid, reported from the area from time to time seem to support this notion. Perhaps the White Shark Café is only an ocean desert at the surface, but holds some prime giant squid hunting grounds way down in the inky depths. Yet for all of the speculation and theorizing, it is still completely unknown as to what draws so many great white sharks here year after year, for what has probably been millennia.
Cracking the secret of why California’s great white sharks come to the White Shark Café is considered to be a very important step in learning about the behavior and movements of these elusive monsters, which face a serious threat of disappearing forever without us ever really having understood anything about them. This is especially true in light of the recent discovery in DNA studies performed at Stanford University that the great white shark population of the Northeast Pacific seems genetically distinct from other populations around the world, having descended from a small number of sharks from Australia and New Zealand around 200,000 years ago and proceeding to evolve in isolation. This new information suggests that the estimated 1,000 Californian great white sharks remaining could be the last of their kind, putting them in a very vulnerable position indeed. Learning more about the sharks’ enigmatic behaviors, such as why they go to the White Shark Café, may shed more light on these misunderstood beasts and their role within the ecosystem as a top predator. For now, though, these reclusive beasts of our nightmares cruise through the depths on their own inscrutable missions, defying many of our attempts to understand them and posing more questions than answers, not the least of which is a remote, unremarkable patch of water to which droves of the toothy beasts cannot resist flocking to.

What does the White Shark Café mean to these sharks? Why do they come here in such large numbers? What are they seeking when they penetrate hundreds of feet down into the dark cold? Are these things that we will ever understand or just some of the many secrets the great white sharks will likely always keep to themselves as they have for millions of years? Whatever the answers may be, just remember that when you hear a report of a single great white terrorizing an area just remember that out there across the deep blue sea, out over the horizon past those churning waves, there is a place where hundreds of them lurk; circling, diving, their intent as murky as the depths to which they dive.

BARAKA_Sandra-Bland
The Black Lives Matter movement has another martyr, as it prepares for a national conference in Cleveland, this weekend. Sandra Bland’s murder in Texas shows, once again, that “defending one’s dignity in an encounter with the police is a crime that that can lead to a death sentence.” The emerging movement must be clear on the political nature of Bland’s death, and that only real power in the hands of the people can break the cycle of oppression.
Authentic justice and liberation will only come when there is authentic de-colonization and revolutionary power in the hands of self-determinate peoples’ and oppressed classes and social groups.”
During the struggle in South Africa black activists who were captured by the state had a strange habit of jumping to their deaths from the windows of jails and courthouses whenever the authorities would turn their backs. In the U.S. the method of suicide black prisoners appear to choose is death by hanging – that is, when they are unable to pull a gun from an officer and shoot themselves in the chest while handcuffed behind their backs.
In Waller County, Texas, Sandra Bland, a young black woman from Illinois, an activist with Black Lives Matter, who was, according to friends and family, excited about her new job in Texas, is stopped for a minor traffic violation, beaten, jailed and found dead two days later in her cell. Her death is labeled a suicide by the Waller County Sheriff Glen Smith.
Because Sandra Bland was an activist who advised others about their rights and the proper way to handle a police encounter, no one is accepting the official explanation that she took her own life.
What does seem clear is that Sandra was a woman who understood her rights and was more than prepared to defend her dignity. However, for a black person in the U.S. defending one’s dignity in an encounter with the police is a crime that that can lead to a death sentence, or in the parlance of human rights, an extra-judicial execution by state agents.
While many are calling for something called justice for Sandra Bland, we would be doing Sandra and all those who have had their lives taken by the agents of repression a disservice if we didn’t place this case in its proper political and historical context.
Sandra was a woman who understood her rights and was more than prepared to defend her dignity.”
A psycho-analytic analysis of the dynamics involved with Blands’ gender and blackness could easily conclude that Bland was perceived as an existential threat to the racist male cops who pulled her out of car. Being a conscious, “defiant” black woman she probably disrupted their psychological order and meaning of themselves by her presence and willingness to defend her dignity.
However, as interesting as the individualized analysis and expressions of the psychopathology of white supremacy might be, the murder of Sandra Bland has to be contextualized politically as part of the intensifying war being waged on black communities and peoples across the country.
And because the state is waging war against us and will be targeting our organizations, as an activist, organizer and popular educator, Sandra’s murder must be seen a political murder and receive sustain focus as such.
Coming right before the Black Lives Matter Movement gathering in Cleveland, Sandra’s murder dramatically drives home the ever present dangers of not just being black in a culture of normalize anti-blackness, but the vulnerabilities associated with being a black activist and especially a black woman activist.
Historically the tyranny of white power has always had its most dehumanized expressions in relationship to black women. The unrestrained and unlimited power of white supremacist domination converged on the captive bodies of black women during slavery and has symbolically and literally continued during the post-enslavement period of capitalist/colonialist subordination of black people in the U.S.
The murder of Sandra Bland has to be contextualized politically as part of the intensifying war being waged on black communities and peoples across the country.”
However, from Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells, Claudia Jones, Fannie Lou Hammer through to Assata Shukur, Elaine Brown, Jaribu Hill and countless others, revolutionary black women held up the sky and provided the vision of liberation over the ages.
When the South African government began to target black women activists, the popular response was that now the racist government had “struck a rock.”
This week, under the leadership of black woman activists, much of the resistance movement to the escalating violence of the state will gather in Cleveland to engage in reflection and planning. Sandra Bland will be on the minds of those activists as well as Malissa Williams, who found herself at the receiving end of 137 bullets fired by members of the Cleveland police department that ripped apart the bodies of her and her companion Timothy Russell. And the activists will certainly highlight the case of 12 year old Tamir Rice who was shot point blank two seconds after police arrived on the scene where he had been playing with his toy gun in a park near his home.
Yet, the assassination of Sandra must be seen as a blow against the movement. That is why the BLM must struggle to develop absolute clarity related to the political, economic, social and military context that it/we face.
We understand history and our responsibilities.”
The struggle in the U.S. must be placed in an anti-colonial context or we will find ourselves begging for the colonial state to violate the logic of its existence by pretending that it will end something called police brutality and state killings. The settler-state is serious about protecting white capitalist/colonialist power while we are still trapped in the language of liberal reformism demanding “justice” and accountability. Those demands are fine as transitional demands if we understand that those demands are just that – transitional. Authentic justice and liberation will only come when there is authentic de-colonization and revolutionary power in the hands of self-determinate peoples’ and oppressed classes and social groups.
The martyrdom of Sandra Bland and all that came before her and who will follow – and there will be more – demands this level of clarity. We did not ask for this war. But we understand history and our responsibilities to our history of resistance and our radical vision that we can be more than we are today. Our enemies want us to think that they are invincible but we know their secrets and know that they can be defeated. All we have to do is to be willing to fight.

…WATCH FRANCE: FRENCH DELEGATES VISIT THE CRIMEA, RUSSIA

It is becoming almost impossible to keep up with international news lately, much less to make any sense of it, particularly where western state actors are concerned. It becomes a bit simpler  to understand radical Islamicism: they're insane, and evil. But the western state actors are a different matter, and at or at least near the top of the list is France, still one of the world's great powers, still able to project military force globally, with a large economy, a sophisticated  technology and a long national, cultural, and philosophical history. It is as impossible to think of the history and development of western institutions and philosophical and artistic culture without France as it is without Italy, Spain, Britain, or Germany. It simply cannot be done. Which makes French actions in the wake of the international, i.e., western sanctions regime against Russia - at least at first glance - difficult to understand.
The difficulty is highlighted by the fact that after the final defeat of Napoleon, French geopolitics assumed a much more cordial relationship with Russia, culminating in the Triple Entente that would fight the Central Powers in World War One, which was being fought one hundred years ago today. The victory of the Central Powers over Russia in early 1918 and their final surrender to the Allies later that year, and the rise of Bolshevism and the French role in the Russian civil war that followed World War One, put those relations in the deep freeze until after the Second World War, when under De Gaulle and the Fifth Republic, more amiable relations were restored between the two countries. In this respect, it is worth recalling that De Gaulle's thermonuclear deterrent, the force de frappe, was as much about securing French independence from Washington, and deterring Germany, as it was about deterring Moscow(though that too, was a consideration for French strategic policy makers).
Then came the USA sponsored coup d'etat against the Yankovich regime in Kiev, the installation of the current and quite backrupt (and quite Fascist) regime in Kiev, the deterioration of relations between the West and Moscow, and of course, the referendum in the Crimea, its reunion with the Russian Federation, and western outrage at the "illegality" of the action. Following this we had the affair of the non-sale of the Mistral class helicopter aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, for which Russia had contracted. There was also, you'll recall, a dizzying round of diplomacy conducted by M. Hollande and Frau Merkel with Mr. Putin trying to negotiate and broker some sort of deal, and to head off even further deterioration of relations between Europe(read Paris and Berlin), and Moscow. In that context, I suggested, despite those two European powers' mouthing of the Washington-sanctions-Mr. Putin-is-an-evil-neo-Bolshevist-throwback-to-Stalin line, that firstly Mr. Putin was no such thing, and that secondly while Paris and Berlin may be publicly mouthing concurrene with Washington, privately they were none too happy about it, and of the two, I suspected that France was the most so. I suggested that one had to "watch France" carefully, and that there would be a series of signals - slowly and unofficially at first, then gaining traction and more official approval - expressing France's displeasure with the direction things were taking accross the pond. I did not, however, expect it to come so quickly, as this RT article shared by Mr. G.B. suggests:
French MPs to make historical visit to reunited Crimea
There are two statements made in this article, widely - and perhaps deliberately and cleverly - separated by the RT editorial staff. One occurs toward the beginning of the article, and the other toward its end, but when viewed together, as I cite them here, outline quite an interesting and suggestive picture:
The head of the mission, MP Thierry Mariani said in an interview with Russian business daily Kommersant that it will consist of nine members of the French National Assembly and one senator. Eight members of the delegation represented the center-left “The Republicans” party, led by Nicolas Sarkozy and two more represented centrists and leftists.
...
In April, a delegation of 20 French lawmakers headed by Thierry Mariani paid a visit to Moscow on Sergey Naryshkin’s invitation. During this visit all its members criticized EU sanctions against Russia. In particular, Mariani called the restrictions “silly and not yielding any positive results.”
French lawmakers said the April visit was a friendship gesture and spoke of similar signals coming from other European governments, who are seeking to mend ties with Russia. (Bold-italics emphases added)
Now this is intriguing from any number of perspectives, not the least of which is the fact that the French delegation were of members of former French President Nicholas Sarkozy's party, indicating that the delegation, notwithstanding official expressions of "regret" from the French Foreign Ministry, had a measure of high level and unofficial support from within the well-trained French technocracy and the French tradition of bureaucratic statecraft. Sarkozy himself, let us recall, has close ties to the giant chemicals company Sanofi, which in turn, is a successor to Hoechst, which in turn was a component of I.G. Far-you-know-who-ben.  So one can guess, without too much imagination that those "similar signals coming from other European governments" include not just Madrid or Rome, but predictably unhappy circles in Berlin and Frankfurt. Recall that within the last two years we've seen an odd pattern emerging from Frau Merkel and her cabinet, as first the German Interior Minister, de Maziere, from a family of long military and political involvement in Germany, and a long tradition of support for American and the Atlantic alliance, objected to Washington's current course and unipolarism. This was followed by the ridiculous claims of German Defense Minister von der Leyen, when she claimed the Luftwaffe had only a few operational aircraft and an insubstantial inventory of spare parts even for those aircraft (uh huh... sure). That was followed by Foreign Minister Steinmeir's speech to a group of German businessmen in Berlin calling for the necessity for Germany to bite the bullet and assume a more military stance on the global stage (doubtless with the non-operational Luftwaffe and its lack of spare parts).  Meanwhile, Frau Merkel plays the part of the oblivious Hausfrau. The reality, of course, is that these statements simply could not have been made without her knowledge and tacit approval. Notwithstanding her public support of the sanctions, the quiet reality is Germany and Russia are slated to expand their energy deals. Then of course, there was Greece, and Paris and even Washington were trying to put the brakes on Berlin.
So from the French point of view, rest assured that a restoration of more amiable relations with Russia is a high, though quiet and unofficial priority.
What to look for?  Well, certainly more "visits" of this sort can be expected, but don't expect to hear about them in the American media. But the fact that this delegation was from M. Sarkozy's party, who so strongly supported Washington in, for example, Libya, indicates that there's been a turn inside France. And all it will take is another De Gaulle to complete that turn. And if there are any "Gaulists" left in France, then Washington has problems.
The other thing to look for? Watch Britain and, for that matter, the British Commonwealth nations. Britain, you'll recall, has joined China's Asia Infrastructure (note that word) Development Bank. And I strongly suspect that that's the least of the things they're discussing in the various London clubs.

THE GEOENGINEERING SCRAPBOOK: CIA AND NASA WANT TO SPRAY THE ATMOSPHERE

The chemtrails and geoengineering issue is not something I have talked about a great deal on this website, but not for lack of interest. My reticence to do so is simply due to the fact that there are many others who have followed this issue much longer, and much more thoroughly, and who are more familiar with it, than I. I first became aware of the geoengineering issue years ago listening to an interview on Art Bell of Dr. Nick Begich and his co-author of Angels Don't Play this HAARP, Jeanne Manning, when they raised the possibilities of that type of use of ionospheric heaters. Indeed, it is difficult not to see geoengineering possibilities for such devices, since they "play around" with the Earth's ionosphere, an activity bound to have effects in the Earth's ecosphere.
But there were and are personal and anecdotal factors in play in my interest in the subject as well. This may be purely a misconception, or perhaps a "mis-remembered" thing upon my part, but I have the distinct impression that in my youth, the sky was slightly bluer than it is now. That's the first little bit of anecdotal information for my personal interest in the subject of geoengineering. The second is that, years ago, while visiting my mother, I stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, and was stunned by what I saw when I looked up, for there in the sky high above were cirrus clouds. But these were no ordinary clouds. They exhibitted a distinctive cross-hatch pattern of genuine rectilinearity, as if I was looking at a huge checkerboard or spider's web made of clouds.
And clouds just don't do that, not with such linearity, perpendicularity, and over a vast area, all on their own.
Now there's this(shared by Mr. S.D.):
CIA And NASA Back Proposals To Spray Aerosols Into Earth’s Atmosphere
What I found disturbing - if true - are these paragraphs:
Geoengineering incorporates strategies to battle and cut the effects of climate change and global warming. It’s a deliberate intervention in the Earth’s climatic system. During the lectures, one method for doing this was illustrated, called Solar Radiation Management (SRM). SRM is the act of spraying stratospheric aerosols into the atmosphere. They outlined how SRM would involve aircraft spraying atmospheric aerosols over decades.
The spraying of aluminum into the atmosphere is also considered within the programs.
“There might be some good reasons to think about aluminum. Aluminum has four times the volumetric rate for small particles as does sulphur. That means you have roughly 16 times less the coagulation rate, and that’s the thing that really drives removal.”David Keith, Canadian Environmental Scientists, Professor of Applied Physics at Gordon McKay, Professor of Public Policy, Harvard University and President of Carbon Engineering.
Aluminum contains aluminum oxide and thorium oxide, which have high emissivity and are considered harmful. The question remains, why does the Department of Defense and the CIA have a hand in backing these geoengineering projects? Is climate and geoengineering a national security issue?
And we may add the following paragraph into the mixture:
An observation made by Rosalind Peterson, President and Co-Founder of the Agriculture Defense Coalition (ADC), identified at a 2007 United Nations inquiry on global warming:
“One of the things that’s affected by climate change is agriculture, but some of what we are seeing is man-made, but man made in a different way than what you may guess. Weather modification programs, experimental ones done by private companies, the US government, are underway and there are more than 50 operations underway across the United States. All of these impact agriculture because they change the micro-climates needed for agriculture to survive. None of these programs are done with oversight. International corporations are modifying our weather all the time, and modifying it in ways that cover thousands and thousands of square miles. Most of it is chemically altered, so what happens is that we are putting ground based chemicals that are shot into the air that change and modify our weather.” (Emphasis in the original)
So what, again, do we have (and again, assuming all these things are true):
  1. The spraying of dangerous chemicals into the atmosphere in the form of aluminum oxide (aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's in some estimations), and thorium oxide;
  2. The advocacy of the CIA and NASA for these activities, which strongly suggests:
  3. A national security component to the effort, and hence, the high octane speculative possibility that "they" know something they're not telling "us"; and finally,
  4. international corporations are also allegedly involved in the activity, raising the political and legal question: who gave them the right (and do they even have the right to engage in activities affecting the entire planet. I would argue no, that this is an egregious over-stepping the bounds of any possible corporate charter).
What interests me are the potential reasons behind any such implied national security motivation. These might range from concerns about protecting the planet in the face of possible magnetic pole shifts, during which period the planet could conceivably be exposed to dangerous levels of solar radation, to knowledge of potential "interventions" from "others", and the need to make the planetary environment as inhospitable as possible. Yet another possibility is that such engineering might be required for certain types of directed energy technologies or weaponry, or various types of communications systems. At this stage, it is anyone's guess.
And that's the problem, for at this stage, if the powers that be do not come forward with more plausible explanations for their climate and geoengineering projects than "climate change", it will continue to be a field day for all sorts of theories.
