THE BRAIN AND NATIONAL SECURITY

Recently as most readers of this site are probably aware, President Obama made a statement in behalf of a multi-million dollar project to map the human brain and its functions. We were re-assured that this would be a step towards the healing of neurological diseases such as Alzheimers’ and Parkinson’s. By extension, one can imagine that perhaps such mapping would lead to a greater understanding of brain cancers.
However, when I heard this news, I could not help but think of darker applications.  There exists an entire literature dedicated to flushing out the details of the CIA’s Project Artichoke and MK-ULTRA mind-control programs, and it takes little imagination to see that an ability to map human brain function, neuron by neuron as it were, would constitute an immense advantage to such programs and their implied technologies. On the battlefield, for example, such knowledge would be – to use military jargon – a “force multiplier.”
Or to put it in different terms, it is a national security matter.
If that sounds the highest flights of fantasy, then read this, right off what a friend of mine, Mr. J.B., called the Dumb Ass Idiots Role-Playing the Apocalypse’s, otherwise known as DARPA’s, website:

The final paragraph of this notice says it all about the emerging technological capabilities:

“DARPA’s planned investment includes new programs to address the areas outlined and ongoing efforts designed to advance fundamental understanding of the brain’s dynamics to drive applications (Revolutionizing Prosthetics, Restorative Encoding Memory Integration Neural Device, Reorganization and Plasticity to Accelerate Injury Recovery, Enabling Stress Resistance), manufacture sensing systems for neuroscience applications (Reliable Neutral Interface Technology, Blast Gauge), and analyze large data sets (Detection and Computational Analysis of Psychological Signals).”

Doubtless an understanding of the brain’s activity would greatly enhance the emerging capabilities of prosthetics, of accelerating recovery from brain injuries, but these same capabilities would, for example, enhance speedier recovery from such injuries on the battlefield, and also not only revolutionize prosthetics, but enable the creation of exoskeletal suits to enhance human capabilities, an obvious boon on the battlefield, or for domestic policing.
As for “reliable neutral interface” technology, the implications of those technologies speak for themselves, and we have covered them often enough on this website.
What remains to be noted, and asked, is that all this wondrous work is being done by an agency whose ties to the military-industrial complex are well-known, and deep. After all, its inception was under the Eisenhower Administration during the Cold War. Which leads to some interesting questions: what are the goals and objectives that are being hidden from us?
We can fairly bet that some of them will include investigations of how these emergent capabilities can be combined with, say, electromagnetic stimulation of the brain (remember Dr. Jose Delgado?).
Put another way, what DARPA is really saying is that the transhumanist agenda that Dr. Scott de Hart and I wrote about in our book (Transhumanism: A Grimoire of Alchemical Agendas) is that the transhumanist agenda – whether it issues in  the “Heaven” or “Hell” versions of the “Singularity,” is an official goal and national policy.
