A lot of people don’t like to fly. Our president is not among that number. Halfway through 2013, the guesstimates for his 2013 Air Force One bill (paid for by the American people) is $24 million, with $6.5 million attributable to the Africa trip alone. (Considering that the Africa trip is estimated to cost taxpayers $100 million, one shouldn’t be too surprised.) This estimate is based upon the fact that, in the first six months of 2013, Obama has already run up a $15.2 million bill, and shows no sign of stopping.
The National Taxpayers Union Foundation (NTUF) has been studying the Air Force One bill, which is one of the few presidential expenses that is easily quantifiable. According to NTUF’s Douglas Kellogg, the president has spent 18 days abroad in the first half of 2013, which puts him ahead of 2010 and 2011, when he spent 20 days abroad for each entire year, and has him on pace to approach his 2009 high of 40 days abroad.
According to the NTUF, “Estimating the potential costs of additional trips the president already has planned for later this year is imprecise, however, using the median cruise speed of Air Force One applied to distances for trips to Moscow, Indonesia, and Brunei, brings the total for President Obama’s 2013 Air Force One costs to over $24 million.”
