THE TRANSHUMANIST SCRAPBOOK: GOOGLE’S PASSWORD PILLS

Now, when Ms. P.H. sent this one to me – followed by many others of you – I ….well….I choked. Well get to my gastro-intestinal disquietude in a moment, but before that particular Google-sponsored endoscopy, let’s recall a few things from this years fun meeting of the wealthy idle-rich who have nothing better to do than plot world domination: the Bilderbergers.
Recall for a moment that two new attendees were invited this year: the CEOs of amazon.com, and of course, Google. Now, with all the scandals going on about NSA and Snowden and “data mining,” one can pretty well guess what Google and amazon were summoned for. (And as an aside, we can imagine the responses if, say, either CEO had said something like, “Oh too bad, can’t make it, have a round of golf scheduled for that day” or “I’m taking the wife and kids out to dinner.” I have visions of a toady-Kissinger-like voice mumbling “You vill be dere or ve vill complicated your life in a fariety uhf uncomfortable vays.”)
What they were summoned for is the vast data-base their respective companies have access to, and for the purposes of integrating them into the growing super-spy culture that the western world is fast becoming.
Well, with that in mind, google now wants us to swallow this one (literally):
Google’s creepiest idea yet: Password pills
Now I hope you caught the important part of that little article, but in case you didn’t, here it is again:
“If you think Google Glass is creepy, just wait until you hear about the company’s plans to develop ‘password pills.’ AllThingsD reports that Regina Dugan, the former chief of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the current head of Motorola’s special projects division, revealed this week that she is working on ‘a pill that can be ingested and then battery-powered with stomach acid to produce an 18-bit internal signal’ that transforms ‘the swallower’s whole body’ into a password.”
Now, I don’t know about you, but what this sounds like to me is a kind of “biometric portal” in the guise of a “password pill” is what is really being sought, in other words, a portable device to measure an individuals biometrics, or, even worse, sequence their genome, so that the genome itself becomes not only a part of the ever-expanding and intrusive corporate-government database, but becomes the means to access the internet.
If so, we can expect a backlash as some people will not, for various moral and ethical reasons, opt for such a device. Without access, however, to information in the crucial information age, they will become increasingly marginalized and second class citizens.
The article gives us bland assurances that such measures would probably never become actual reality, but I am not so sure. When Dr. Scott D de Hart and I were researching and writing Transhumanism: A Grimoire of Alchemical Agendas, we were struck repeatedly by how many people embraced the potentialities of such human-machine “cyborg” interfaces, and how grandiloquently they waxed about the potentialities…
Very seldom did we encounter those willing to raise moral and ethical questions about those possibilities. And of course, for certain “eschatological” Yahwist traditions – and all Yahwist traditions are eschatological – such ideas resonate with purported end time scenarios and marks of the beast and so on… such will be greeted, therefore, both with a sense of apocalyptic foreboding and yet (in the wondrous moral schizophrenia that is Yahwism) in happy expectation.
And of course, the beastly computers with their Sentient World Simulations are already gaming such scenarios.
