At a Dec. 15, 2012 news conference, a medical examiner said all of the victims of the Connecticut school shooting were shot multiple times with a rifle. He added that the wounds were all over—or in various locations on the bodies.
Dr. H. Wayne Carver told reporters he believes all of the children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown on Dec. 14 were first graders and that each of their deaths was a homicide.
He noted that by 1:30 p.m. ET, all of the autopsies had been completed, except for the suspected gunman and his mother, which will be done on Sunday.
Carver also spoke about the victims’ wounds, saying they were caused by one weapon—a semi automatic rifle.
Of the seven autopsies he completed, he said two of them were close range shootings.
He also stated that photographs were taken of the victims to allow their families to identify their bodies.
When asked if these autopsies have been more difficult than those he’s been involved with in the past, he said in the three decades he has been doing his job, this is the toughest case he has ever dealt with.
According to CNN, Adam Lanza, 20, is believed to have entered the school wearing all black, and armed with three firearms, at around 9:41 a.m. After going on a shooting rampage, the gunman then committed suicide at the crime scene.
CNN reports that Lanza’s mother, Nancy Lanza, was found dead in the family home.
After the shooting, 20 children and six adults were dead. Nancy Lanza and the shooter bring the death toll to 28.
