Chicago Sees 47 Shot Over Weekend, Could Gun Control Not Be Working?
Chicago proves that gun control works – that is, it works if your goal is to increase gun crime. If you want to decrease gun crime, however, copying Chicago, which has among the strictest gun-control laws in the United States might not be the way to go.This past weekend, gun crime in Chicago left 8 people dead and 47 people wounded. In the 24-plus hours from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening, 34 people were shot, 7 fatally. And in the 24 hours from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon, another 13 people were shot, 1 fatally.
Surprisingly enough, the above is good news. Last June, 53 people got shot in Chicago in a single weekend, with 9 dying. And despite the incredible violence, a Chicago police spokesman noted that 2013 has actually been pretty good, with the lowest number of homicides in years.
Gun control advocates point to Chicago as the reason why there should be even more gun control. In their logical universe, if a lot of gun control results in more murders, then even more gun control should result in fewer murders.

These logic-challenged people would do well to look at Washington, D.C., which also had strict gun control and a high murder rate. When the Supreme Court struck down Washington’s gun-control laws, its violent crime dropped by 25%. Guns don’t cause violent crime, culture causes violent crime – and guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens can change the culture.
