Reports Reveal NSA Director Is ‘Deranged Cowboy’

The Director of the National Security Agency (NSA) is completely deranged, according to recent media reports. When he was in charge of the U.S. Army’s Intelligence and Security Command, General Keith Alexander reportedly hired a Hollywood set designer to remodel part of the organization’s office to look like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek: the Next Generation.
The purpose of this facility (called the “information dominance center”) was supposed to provide total “informational awareness for the army.” That’s right, the man now in charge of the NSA used an undetermined amount of public money to remodel his office space so he could play Star Trek like a little boy.

To make matters worse, Alexander apparently uses the motto “collect it all” to describe his approach to intelligence. The general wants to collect as much information as possible in order to increase his own power. This, of course, further explains the extreme depths to which the NSA will go collect data on alternative journalism and news sources — primarily because of the fact that the real media is beating out the mega media and spy government system alike.

The NSA’s Cowboy

This, of course, is only one of Alexander’s many questionable activities. The journal Public Affairs has labeled Alexander a “cowboy” who is out of control. Mother Jones magazine reported that between 2006 (a year after Alexander took over the NSA) and 2009, the NSA routinely submitted false information to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (or FISA court), which is supposed to oversee the intelligence community’s surveillance operations.
In other words, the NSA committed perjury, which I must point out here is a crime. Worse, the FISA simply ignored the court and did as it pleased. The NSA could get away with this because the FISA court’s deliberations are secret.
What’s worse is that the NSA’s surveillance efforts led to just three preliminary investigations of possible terrorists, Harvard law professor Yochai Benkler alleges. Benkler made that allegation after studying some recently released FISA court documents. In other words, all the money spent by the NSA and the privacy violations have not enhanced national security.
It’s easy to see why Benkler is demanding that Alexander be removed from office. The man and his agency are clearly out of control and unaccountable. What makes things worse is that Congressional leaders were aware of some of General Alexander’s nutty behavior. Many of them reportedly enjoyed sitting in the Captain’s chair in the general’s high-tech man cave.
The mentality we’re seeing in Washington today is frightening. It needs to be brought under control, and the best way to do that would be to simply cut off the money to the NSA. Unfortunately, such intelligent behavior from Congress is too much to ask for.
