Post II: The Material Harvesters
The instruments failed. The instrument-makers did not disappear. As Allied forces crossed into Germany in the spring of 1945, the United States Army Air Forces had already planned for exactly that fact. The operation was code-named LUSTY — LUftwaffe Secret TechnologY — and its mandate was narrow and urgent: get to Germany's advanced aeronautical technology before retreating German forces could sabotage it, before looting civilians could scatter it, or before Soviet capture teams could reach it first.
The operational spearhead was a small team of test pilots, engineers, and linguists who called themselves Watson's Whizzers, led by Colonel Harold E. Watson. Their job was as dangerous as it sounds: locate unfamiliar German jet and rocket aircraft — some booby-trapped, most without manuals — figure out how to fly them on-site, and get them out of active combat zones intact.
The operation captured a genuine hoard: intact Messerschmitt Me 262 twin-jet fighters, Arado Ar 234 twin-jet reconnaissance bombers, the Heinkel He 162 jet interceptor. But the most consequential find wasn't an airframe. It was paper.
At the Luftfahrtforschungsanstalt (LFA), a research facility hidden in the forests outside Braunschweig, American intelligence teams found intact supersonic wind tunnels and a substantial archive of aerodynamic research data — including mathematical work on using swept-back wings to delay the onset of compressibility and shockwaves near the speed of sound. American aerospace engineering had not gotten there yet. The data existed; the question was who would end up holding it.

To move the haul, the U.S. requisitioned HMS Reaper, a Ruler-class escort carrier originally laid down for the U.S. Navy and transferred to Britain under Lend-Lease, then modified as a floating transport. Watson's team packed the most significant aircraft and equipment in anti-corrosive cosmoline grease and loaded them aboard. Operation LUSTY's total haul, across every collection method and site, came to 16,280 items — roughly 6,200 tons of machinery, prototypes, and instruments; intelligence officers later selected 2,398 of those items for detailed technical analysis.
The Reaper crossed the Atlantic and put in at Bayonne, New Jersey, where its cargo was barged to Newark Army Airfield for onward distribution. From there, the captured aircraft and documents went to Wright Field in Ohio and Freeman Field in Indiana — for teardown, reverse-engineering, and, in several cases, hazardous live flight evaluation by American test pilots learning an enemy's aircraft from the inside.
A wind tunnel tells you what a wing will do. It does not tell you why an engineer chose that wing, or what he'd choose next. The airframes and the data crossed the Atlantic on the Reaper. The men who built them were still in Germany — and in the closing weeks of the war, that made them a different kind of cargo entirely.
