Celebrity Worship: Kanye West’s $120 Plain White T-Shirts Sell Out Instantly
Kanye West’s line of plain white t-shirts, devoid of any imagery or special characteristics and priced at $120 each, have completely sold out virtually instantaneously after going on sale in what amounts to a display of how consumers are truly under a spell of celebrity worship.
Kanye
West is of course the rap artist who recently released his
album “Yeezus,” an album which mockingly substitutes Kanye for Jesus
Christ and comes complete with promotional photos that include Kanye
shedding a tear while adorned with a crown of thorns. But in additional
to launching the moronic album with the key track “I Am a God” at the
helm, Kanye West has also fooled his fans into purchasing plain white
cotton t-shirts that have been priced so highly that even a first grader
would be skeptical.In fact, the $120 plain white t-shirts managed to sell out at warp speed along with the rest of Kanye’s line, to the point that the website offering the items actually crashed due to overwhelming traffic from eager buyers. This means that not only did the shirts sell out virtually instantaneously right at 10 a.m. when they went on sale, but hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of other consumers were attempting to purchase the $120 plain white t-shirts for themselves as well.
There’s really no telling how many of these will be sold when Kanye stocks his inventory full of the t-shirts once again, which he likely buys in bulk for about 10 dollars or less per shirt.
Societal Degradation
What’s perhaps most amazing to me when looking at this situation is the realization that literal hordes of consumers are going out and looking to spend $120 on these plain white t-shirts while we also face serious funding issues for groups that are fighting hard each and every day to preserve our freedoms. Let alone groups or individuals that are out there in the ‘urban battlefield’ tackling hunger, poverty, homelessness, you name it. But instead of taking 120 dollars and fueling these operations, or even using it as an investment to potentially buy precious metals or something, enough people were willing to give Kanye ‘Yeezus’ West their 120 greenbacks for a worthless t-shirt with no inherent value.When I see things like this happen, especially in such a large scale, this shows me where society stands today. And right now, we see things like this happening more and more. Not only do we face major economic woes to the point that very talented individuals are out of jobs and barely able to provide for their families, but we have the poor spending their cash on things like Kanye West’s ‘Hip Hop’ t-shirt. This signifies the degradation of our society in ways that we also see with the acceptance of Orwellian NSA protocols, the acceptance of Constitution-free zones in many major US cities, the acceptance of complete and utter mainstream media incompetence, and so on.
Ultimately, we can judge a society based on its actions much more so than anything else. While we definitely have informed individuals laughing at this entire concept of purchasing a worthless t-shirt for $120, we also have potentially hundreds of thousands (at least) who want to follow the latest ‘trendy’ celebrity crazes and throw their limited dollars at something like Kanye ‘Yeezus’ West’s overpriced ‘Hip Hop’ t-shirt. Meanwhile, legitimate operations like Storyleak and all of the great websites that share my work like Infowars are criticized for daring to host a few ads in order to pay for the necessary infrastructure required to spread the word internationally.
