Adam Lanza’s Hard Drive Destroyed Before Attack

Investigators say that their attempts to extract data from Adam Lanza’s hard drive have failed. Although the Connecticut State Police teamed with the FBI to pull the data, hoping to use the information to learn more as to why the 20-year-old killed his mother, 20 children, 6 educators, and himself, Lanza’s hard drive had been destroyed beyond repair.
Sources told The Hartford Courant that the drive was smashed into pieces, and ABC News revealed that it “appeared to have been badly damaged with a hammer or screwdriver.” Experts also believe that Lanza may have wiped the drive’s data before wrecking it physically.
“Obviously, [the FBI] have a lot of resources to [extract the data]. And, if the drive’s platters aren’t smashed they can put them into another drive and read them,” Michael Kessler, CEO of Kessler International said to Computerworld. “But if he broke the platters, the likelihood of data recovery is slim to none.”
On Monday, one investigator stated the obvious hypothesis, “He was eliminating [investigators'] ability to figure out what websites he had gone to or who he might have been communicating with.”
It is unknown if authorities plan to use other methods, such as combing his email accounts, to glean information regarding his motive.
The Courant reports that one source said Lanza “used the computer to play a violent video game in which life-like characters engage in graphic battle scenes.” While the paper did not identify the game, other news outlets reported that it was Dynasty Warriors.
Peter Lanza, Adam’s father, and older brother, Ryan, 24, have allegedly spent hours answering questions for investigators but have been unable to shed any light on what sparked Adam’s deadly rage. Ryan said immediately after the attack Friday that he had not been in contact with his brother since 2010.
Police have declined specific comment on evidence gathered at Sandy Hook or Nancy Lanza’s home.  They are not yet ready to discuss a possible motive.
